Tough specification demands behind record-breaking valve

China is not only a huge and important market, it is also hold an industry requiring large components. Stafsjö were consulted with a challenge, which one solved and qualified Stafsjö into the group of suppliers to one of the world’s largest pulp and paper mills. “We are breaking new ground” says Stafsjö’s KAM Pulp and Paper in China Su Chuansheng.

The blow tank tower is 32 meters high and the pressure is obviously very high. The bottom valve should be able to hold this tight and to operate through highly concentrated pulp. The environment is aggressive and exposed.

– This was a demanding project, explains Su Chuansheng.

– There was no knife gate valve in such a large dimension for a duty like this, as far as we know. We went through the whole process together with the end customer and machine supplier and made some detailed calculations. The outcome was a success, adds Su.

The end customer is a giant within the Chinese business world and one of the largest producers within the pulp and paper industry. Their catalogue of demands is clear. Growth and productivity are in focus, but not at the expense of economic, social and environmental sustainable values. It wants to be a model playing a leading role in the industry.

To achieve near-zero emission rates and minimize consumption of resources, the pulp producer carefully selects its technical solutions.  High quality at a reasonable price. To meet this challenge, Stafsjö was forced to make every effort. The result was one of the largest valves in the company’s history, tailored to meet requirements from the customer.

–The valves have gradually increased in size over the last years. It was not so long ago that we manufactured a couple of DN 1200 (48”) valves. Then we made some DN 1400 (56”) for Brazil and now we have built a DN 1600 (64”) valve. But then again, we have the competence and expertise amongst our design engineers and a strong team in the workshop, says Marcelo Alvarez, Product Manager for Stafsjö in China.

So it was a ’real piece’ – a customized MV valve – that left Stafsjö’s factory for its eastward bound train journey. Back in China, work is now underway to deal with new enquiries and projects.

Stafsjö is a strong and well-known knife gate brand in China. With an office in the country for over twenty years, it is easier to monitor market demands and there are still many sectors with a strong growth. With this reference, the company will be able to further strengthen its position within Pulp and Paper industry.

– We have the skills and experience which allows customers to consult with us to find the adaptations for various processes. Our strength is also that we keep delivery times, even if they are tight sometimes, says Su.

New high strength top works execution on the WB valve range up to DN 600/24"

The coated steel beams supplied earlier on the WB range (WB, WB11, WB12 and WB14) up to DN 600/24" have been replaced by Stafsjö’s high strength top works with stainless steel tie rods encapsulated inside structural aluminum beams together with stainless steel gate guards on remote operated valves. This new standard execution offers great corrosion resistance and a precise gate alignment independent of valve position.

After 350 years Stafsjö Valves are stronger than ever

In recent years, Stafsjö has invested over SEK 50 million in order to expand. Within four years the turnover should be SEK 200 million annually. This goal will be attained with new products within new market sectors as well as new countries, whilst simultaneously strengthening the position on existing markets.

– Innovation and local availability worldwide are our strengths, says Thomas Carlson, the President of Stafsjö.

–Together with our customers we work to understand the demands placed not only on today’s processes, but also those of tomorrow. By ensuring that our valves are in stock around the globe we operate as a fast and flexible supplier of high performance knife gate valves for complex processes in varying dimensions, he adds.

Stafsjö may be something of a ’dark horse’, but it is a well known name amongst major players within paper and pulp, mining, power generation and water treatment. Over 1 million of our valves have been installed around the world and 86% of the production is exported. Growth markets are the USA, Australia and South East Asia, the latter primarily driven by Indonesia. An initiative made in the mining industry in Mexico has also been sucessfull.

– We now have a product portfolio covering a considerably broader range. Our long experience of tight shut-off valves for full flow applications enables us to allow our development team to push this technology still further, says Carlson.

Established already in 1666, Stafsjö is today one of the oldest operating company in Sweden. Production commenced with the manufacture of cannons for the Swedish armed forces and remained the core business activity for two centuries. In 1881, the production of valves started and in 1928 the first knife gate valve was launched for the paper and pulp industry in the region.

Since 2005 Stafsjö has been owned by Ebro Armaturen Gebr. Bröer GmbH headquartered in Hagen, Germany, and a specialist in production and development of butterfly valves. With Stafsjö’s knife gate valves, the group can offer a complete range of valves for the process industry. Bröer Group has around 1000 employees and is represented at 26 locations across the globe. A 70-strong workforce is employed at Stafsjö. In the financial year 2015, the Bröer Group generated revenues of EUR 160 million.

If you wish to conduct your own interview with Stafsjö’s President, Thomas Carlson, who can tell you more about our product development, new products and production, take advantage of contacting him directly and arrange an appointment.

The 350th anniversary celebrations commence with speeches and a cannon salute at 17.00 Thursday, May 26. Thomas Carlson can be reached on Tel +46 (0)11-36 75 55 or by e-mail thomas.carlson@stafsjo.se

Stafsjö’s WB14E is a high performance shut-off valve with superior flow characteristics, offering bi-directional zero leakage shut-off up to 150 psi/10 bar up to 24” (DN 600). It is suitable for media such as pulp stock, chemicals, slurry, sludge, bio mass and water.

During the past years Stafsjö has invested significantly in development of new products in order to expand the business into new field of applications. A strong focus has also been to extend the product range and to customize solutions in order to meet new and challenging process demands from markets and applications Stafsjö historically has worked with for a long time, such as the pulp and paper segment.  The new WB14E knife gate valve will strengthen our position on some target markets, applications and helps us grow into new segments as well.

- We have seen a strong demand from especially the North American and Australian markets for WB14E – a high performance fully lugged shut-off valve with superior flow characteristics offering bi-directional tight shut-off. As one of the pioneers and still leading brand in knife gate solutions we wanted to strengthen our position on the target markets and further establish ourselves as a trusted partner to segments like pulp and paper, mining and mineral processing, water and waste water handling and power plus various other process industries with a need for a valve offering reliable and zero leakage shut-off. With over 100 years experience of valve manufacturing and more than a million valves installed worldwide we are confident this WB14E will also provide reliability to our customers process systems with a competitive cost of ownership, says Maria Persson, Sales and Marketing Director at Stafsjö.

Stafsjö 350 years – from royal cannons to a world leading knife gate valve manufacturer

It all started out with manufacturing of cannons and it became a nearly 200 year long tradition (1666-1859). Today Stafsjö is a globally leading supplier of knife gate solutions for shut-off and flow control within the process industry. We have over 1 million valves installed worldwide. Major players in pulp and paper, mining, power and water utilities depend our valve solutions reliability and performance every minute, every day, year after year.

Already in 1881 the first valve was manufactured at Stafsjö – a gate valve. The manufacturing of knife gate valves started in 1928 in close co-operation with the near-by pulp and paper mills. The first knife gate valve came with a bottom pocket (draining pocket) and pretty soon thereafter a model came without bottom pocket. The name for these valves was Pulp Valve and they were available in sizes DN 80 up to DN 500. A control valve was also developed.

During the first manufacturing years the valve came in cast iron. In mid 1930’s, valve parts such as valve body, gate and gland were available in acid-proof metal (bronze). On request, valves in acid-proof steel were also available.

Leveraging on this long experience of tight shut-off valves for full flow applications we continue to focus our development team to push this technology as far as possible. And through our sister company Ebro Armaturen and external sales partners, we are able to provide fast deliveries, high quality service and support to local markets worldwide.
